Sitar

The sitar is a long-necked plucked lute with movable frets, played melody strings, a row of drone strings and sympathetic strings that ring on their own. Its signature is the deep pulled bend across a single fret and the buzzing, shimmering tone that surrounds every note.

01 / DNA

The DNA.

Four pillars that make Sitar sound like itself — and the words that steer it.

Pillar 01

Origins

The sitar took shape in North Indian courts a few centuries ago, drawing on older lutes and long-necked instruments from the region and further west. It became the leading instrumental voice of Hindustani music in the modern concert era.

Pillar 02

Performance structure

Sitar recitals follow the alap, jor, jhala and gat arc. The player alternates melody strokes with strikes on the chikari (rhythm drone strings), which drives the fast jhala sections.

Pillar 03

Instruments

A gourd resonator, a wide bone bridge that creates the buzzing jawari tone, up to 20 strings including sympathetic taraf strings, and a wire plectrum called mizrab. Usually accompanied by tabla and tanpura.

Pillar 04

Tonal system

Frets are moved to suit each raga, and the player pulls the string sideways to reach several notes from one fret. That meend is how microtonal shading and raga-specific approach notes are produced.

07 / FAQ

Questions.

Can I use these tracks commercially?

Songs made on the Free plan are for personal use. Paid plans carry commercial use rights for music generated while the plan is active. Read the terms at /terms for exactly what that covers before you release or license anything.

Can I choose the raga or scale?

Yes. Name the raga for classical results, or a Western mode such as Mixolydian or Dorian when you want sitar colour in a pop or rock track.

What styles can sitar appear in?

Classical recitals, light-classical songs, film-style arrangements, psychedelic rock, lo-fi and ambient electronic all work well.

Do I need to know sitar technique terms?

No, but words like meend (bends), chikari (drone strokes) and jhala (fast climax) are an easy way to steer the performance.

Does it sound like a real sitar?

The buzzing tone and bends are approximated convincingly, but the sympathetic string resonance and fine microtones can be stylised. For release, many producers layer or replace with a recorded player.
