Hindustani classical music is the raga tradition of North India. A performance grows from a single drone: the soloist first explores the raga freely, then settles into a rhythmic cycle with the tabla, building from meditative to virtuosic. Every raga carries its own mood and, traditionally, its own hour of the day.

Origins

Rooted in temple chant and court patronage across North India, the tradition was shaped by centuries of exchange between Indic and Persian musical cultures. Knowledge passes through gharanas — lineages that each favour their own approach to voice, rhythm and ornament.

Performance structure

A recital typically moves from alap (free, unmetered exploration) through jor (a steady pulse) and jhala (fast strummed climax) before the composition, or gat, arrives with tabla. Vocal forms follow a similar arc from slow vilambit to fast drut.

Instruments

Sitar, sarod, bansuri, santoor, sarangi and shehnai carry melody; tabla and pakhawaj keep the cycle; tanpura sustains the drone; harmonium often accompanies the voice.

Pillar 04

Tonal system

Ragas are organised into thaats, parent scales such as Kalyan, Bhairav or Khamaj. A raga is more than a scale: it has characteristic phrases, emphasised notes (vadi and samvadi), and rules about how notes are approached. Rhythm lives in talas like Teentaal (16 beats), Jhaptaal (10) and Ektaal (12).

Questions.

Can I use these tracks commercially?

Songs made on the Free plan are for personal use. Paid plans carry commercial use rights for music generated while the plan is active. Read the terms at /terms for exactly what that covers before you release or license anything.

Can I name a specific raga or tala?

Yes. Put the raga (for example Yaman or Bhupali) and the tala (Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Ektaal) near the start of your Styles or description. Adding the time of day and the section plan (alap, jor, gat) helps the model stay in character.

Which forms work best?

Instrumental recitals, tabla solos, light-classical vocal pieces like ghazal and thumri, and qawwali come through most convincingly. Full-length khayal recitals are compressed into song length, so ask for the arc rather than an hour of it.

Do I need to know music theory?

No. Naming a mood and an instrument is enough to start. Raga and tala names are a way to be more precise once you know what you want.

How authentic do the instruments sound?

The model approximates each instrument's timbre and common ornaments such as meend and gamak. Microtonal detail and strict raga grammar can be stylised, so treat results as inspired by the tradition rather than a substitute for a trained performer.
