Bansuri Flute

Origins

Bamboo flutes are among the oldest instruments on the subcontinent and are tied in art and story to pastoral life and devotion. The long bass bansuri became a full concert instrument in the twentieth century.

Performance structure

Classical bansuri follows the alap, jor, jhala and gat arc, adapted to breath. Phrases are shaped by breath length, with circular-sounding sustains and quick tonguing in fast passages.

Instruments

Bansuri comes in many lengths, from high and bright to long and deep. It pairs with tanpura, tabla or pakhawaj, and in lighter music with santoor, strings and soft percussion.

Tonal system

Half-holing and finger sliding let the player bend smoothly between notes, producing the meend and microtonal shading that ragas require. Pentatonic ragas like Bhupali and Durga sit especially naturally.
